An NIMH-funded study investigating the effects of maternal mood and antidepressant drug use on fetal and infant behavior and development
- Maternal mood assessments entail a computerized-structured interview (SCID) and self-report of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress
- Fetal heart rate, fetal movement, and maternal uterine tone are monitored using a specially-engineered software program integrated with the Toitu actocardiograph.
- Infant assessments include a 30-minute behavioral state observation and the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scales.
- Saliva samples are taken to measure cortisol levels.
- Pregnant women who screen positive for depression are further assessed by a psychiatrist, who discusses treatment options and those who opt to be prescribed antidepressant medications are closely monitored for symptoms and medication compliance (by urine screen).
