Elaine F. Walker, Ph.D.

Research Interests

Dr. Walker’s research focuses on the precursors and neurodevelopmental aspects of psychopathology, especially schizophrenia. Ongoing research is concerned with brain development, hormones, and neuropsychological functions that may play a role in risk for and prevention of mental illness in young adulthood.

Current Projects

The Development and Mental Health (DMH) Research Program is supported by the National Institute of Mental Health.   It is one of the eight research centers participating in the North American Prodromal Longitudinal Studies (NAPLs).  The NAPLs sites collaborate on studies of the early indicators of risk for psychotic disorders.  Drawing on increased scientific understanding of brain development during adolescence and early adulthood, investigators hope to identify factors that contribute to mental illness in adolescence and young adulthood.

The DMH program at Emory is currently enrolling participants in this project.  The focus is on individuals between the ages of 13 and 30 years, who are recently experiencing two or more of the following; problems with functioning at work or school, a decline in interest in social activities, and unusual ideas or sensory experiences,. 

All participants undergo a comprehensive assessment, including psychological tests, laboratory tests, and an MRI scan.  The assessments are conducted at the main Emory campus in Atlanta. There is no charge.
