Recent faculty honors
Dr. Donna Maney has received a Presidential
Early Career (PECASE) award for research accomplishments and promise
and significant educational contributions. Dr. Maney, who joined the faculty in 2002, conducts research on the neural circuitry
underlying communication and social behavior in songbirds. The award is considered to be the highest national honor for researchers
in science in early stages of their careers. Dr. Maney is a member of the Neuroscience and Animal Behavior program and teaches
in the undergraduate NBB program as well as in Psychology.

Dr. Laura Namy has been honored with the second annual Editor's
Choice Award for Best Article in the Journal
of Cognition and Development for her paper entitled "The changing role of iconicity in non-verbal symbol learning:
a U-shaped trajectory in the acquisition of arbitrary gestures", with Aimee Campbell and Michael Tomasello. The award
is given to the article which best exemplifies criteria of broad relevance, rigor and substance of argument, quality of expression
and ingenuity. Dr. Namy is a member of the Cognition and Development program and coordinator for the joint major in Psychology
and Linguistics.

Psychology Summer Study Abroad
The Department’s Program in the United Kingdom is currently accepting applications for Summer 2006 Study in Child Development. Students spend six weeks in Scotland, Ireland, and/or England gathering data in primary schools and analyzing results, and receive eight credits for their work. In 2005, forty undergraduates, accompanied by six Psychology faculty, studied factors related to the development of social competence in schoolchildren, enjoyed a variety of excursions, and made new friendships. For information on the 2006 program, go to the CIPA website, or contact Dr. Harold Gouzoules, Summer Director. Qualified undergraduates from outside Emory may also apply.

Majors Poster Fair
The Department held its semi-annual undergraduate poster session on December 12 th in the Cox Hall Ballroom. Students in Psyc200WR (Lab in Experimental Methods) were joined by students from the 2005 Summer Study abroad program. Over 80 students working in 38 research teams presented their studies to psychology department faculty and graduate students. Three teams were selected as winners on the basis of quality of the study, visual presentation, oral description of the study design and results, and responses to judges' questions. Congratulations to the winning teams!

The Department of Psychology extends a warm welcome to our new arriving graduate students. Ten new faces will be
joining us this fall from as far away as Romania and as close as metro Atlanta.

The Department of Psychology extends a warm welcome to our newly arriving graduate students. Seventeen new faces have begun work with us this fall.
Congratulations to our newly minted PhDs Jennifer Bohanek, Trina Brown, Franklynn Graves, Carla Harenski, Debora (Sasso) Herold, Amy Pollick, and Heather Rupp, all of whom completed their degrees in spring or summer 2006.
A New Space for Psychology
The architectural firm of Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum (HOK) has been selected to do programming and design for the new psychology building. HOK has a more than twenty-year history of working on the Emory campus (their most recent completed campus structure is the Whitehead Building), is a leader in the use of sustainable design and conservation, and has experience with vivaria and fMRI design. The programming phase will begin in January. The projected completion date for the building is 2008.
Department Searches
The Department of Psychology, Program in Cognition and Development, is currently performing a search
for a tenure-track assistant professor in the area of cognitive development.
Emory University, Program in Cognition and Development, anticipates appointing a tenure-track assistant professor
in the area of cognitive development. Research areas of particular interest focusing on a developmental perspective include,
but are not limited to, perceptual cognition, concepts and categories, memory, space, and number. Applications from candidates
with computational or quantitative skills are particularly welcome. Applicants must have a Ph.D. and show evidence of an
active research program as well as teaching experience.

Drs. Robyn Fivush and Marshall Duke have been featured for their study of family narratives, performed in conjunction with the MARIAL center, in a number of news outlets, including CNN Headline News, the Washington Post, Boston Globe, and the Wall Street Journal, as well as the Emory Report.
Dr. Frans de Waal’s recently published book Our Inner Ape has been the subject of numerous items including reviews and stories in the New York Times (and chosen as a NYT Notable Book for 2005), the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, New Statesman, and the Guardian .
Dr. Sherryl Goodman was featured in the Emory Report in a story on her research and career in the study of family relationships and the development of psychopathology.
Dr. Hillary Rodman’s psychology freshman seminar Science and Myth of Baseball has been the subject of stories in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Emory Report .
